The time has stopped for the moment of intimacy, it is neither night nor day; two figures coexisting in their pensive universe. It’s impossible to understand what lies between them: tenderness or pity, angst or shyness, neither we know if it’s a beginning or an ending. As in real life, though we see someone’s appearance closely, we are often unaware of what their soul is up for, what holds people together. They are close and distant to a viewer at the same time. The veil of unknowingness allows us to watch the fragile moment without hesitation. Working from imagination often brings distant memories and vague sentiments to the canvases, ironically linking me to something in the past, that starts long before, yet has to do with me. In this particular case the characters remind of the artist’s parents.
