fresco is the most perfect form of monumental painting. History gives us neither the time, nor the origin, nor even the author who first practiced the art of fresco. But its use goes back a long way in the past: we find vestiges of it in Egyptian temples. In Italy, the most remarkable frescoes have been found in Herculaneum and Pompeii. Between 1200 and 1600, the fresco took such a vogue that this art reached its peak with painters such as Giotto, Piero Della Francesca, Michelangelo, Raphael, etc.

Fresco painting is the most durable painting. Dry, it retains its colors indefinitely. A well-made fresco fears neither light, nor dust, nor changes in temperature, and it defies centuries.
