Coming from Northeast China, his aesthetic sensibility is deeply shaped by the cold Manchurian borderlands, where Chinese, Russian, and Korean cultures intertwine. Qi Han focuses on buried memories, ritual knowledge related to natural forces, nocturnal visions, and collective myths.
In his works, fragmented, translucent, or ghostly figures often emerge, as if rising from layers of the subconscious or magnetic fields. These creations engage in dialogue with the shamanic traditions of Northeast China—particularly practices related to animal spirits and possession rituals—and resonate with Korea’s ‘mudang’ (shaman) traditions, extending across this mysterious and fluid region.
His visual language bears post-ethnographic characteristics: it rejects exoticization and instead constructs an inner cartography, tracing the intersections between territory and trauma, and opening a dialogue among austere materiality, invisible spirituality, and fractured memory.
